Trooper Ashley Smith killed in Afghanistan

The latest British soldier to die in Afghanistan - the 299th since the conflict began - has been named as Trooper Ashley Smith, 21, from York.

Trooper Smith of the Royal Dragoon Guards was killed in an explosion on Friday June 18 as he guarded comrades who were clearing land in front of a checkpoint.

Major Denis James, Officer Commanding Viking Group, D (The Green Horse) Squadron in which Trooper Smith served, said: "The most fitting epitaph for Trooper Smith is that he died a brave death. He volunteered to join a team clearing a location known to be sown with Improvised Explosive Devices."

Trooper Smith had only deployed to Afghanistan earlier this month.

Lasting Tribute's section for the Heroes of Afghanistan contains 300 tributes as we have also included a serving soldier who died from illness.

You can also show your respects on our Facebook page honouring our fallen heroes which now has more than 13,000 members.
