Police chief dons running shoes for murdered cop

The chief constable of Nottinghamshire, Steve Green, is raising money for a trust named in memory of a murdered policeman by running more than 180 miles between every police station and contact point in the county.

The Christopher McDonald Trust was established by the parents of the policeman a year after he was killed to fund an outdoor pursuit training and educational scholarship, aimed at encouraging teamwork and personal reflection.

Pc McDonald was 19 when he was killed with his own truncheon after tackling a suspected burglar in May 1978. He was on the night shift in Worksop when he responded to an alarm going off at a jeweller's. When he got there, he chased the suspect and others towards the River Ryton. But after radioing his colleagues to say he was in contact with the suspects nothing more was heard of him.

His body was later found in the river. Peter Albert Loveday, 20, was subsequently convicted of the murder and jailed for life.

Pc McDonald was posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.

Chief Constable Green said: "We will always remember Christopher and we will never forget the selflessness of his family in creating a lasting trust that continues to benefit our officers."
