Sad news that Lorenzo Odone, the subject of the 1992 film Lorenzo's Oil, has died in America one day after his 30th birthday.
The tireless quest of his parents in searching for a cure - after he was diagnosed with a rare, terminal condition known as ALD - was made into a film starring Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon as Lorenzo's parents.
His real-life parents, Augusto and Michaela, refused to accept the doctor's prognosis in 1984 that their six-year-old son only had two years to live.
They experimented with a range of treatments until hitting on a blend of oils that seemed to help. Their work continues today through the Myelin Project. Mrs Odone died from cancer in 2002, but Lorenzo leaves behind his father, brother and sister.
